emdr treatment

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and it is a psychotherapy system that harnesses the power of bilateral movements to desensitize and reprocess traumatic memories.

EMDR has over 30 research studies showing its efficacy in trauma work and beyond. EMDR studies have shown up to a 90% reduction rate in PTSD symptoms in only 3 sessions. Of course, everyone is difference and the exact time it takes to experience relief will be different for everyone. Studies have also shown that EMDR is more effective than some medications in the treatment of PTSD.

You can read more about EMDR here. You can also read some of the research supporting EMDR here, here and here. You can also read research on the mechanics of why EMDR therapy works here.

What does EMDR treat?

EMDR is commonly referred to as the “gold standard” treatment for PTSD and single event traumatic episodes. However, there is a growing body of evidence that EDMR is also useful in the treatment of the following:

  • Addictions

  • Attachment disorders

  • Body dysmorphic disorder

  • Eating disorders

  • Anxiety

  • Grief and loss

  • Phobias and Philias

  • Panic disorder

  • Immigration/refugee experiences

It should be noted that this is not an exhaustive list and that research continues to be done on utilizing EMDR in populations outside of PTSD.

How can I receive EMDR treatment?

I have completed the EMDR basic training through the EMDR Institute in California. You can learn about the institute here. I am working on getting certified through EMDRIA, which you can read about here. I am actively engaged in EMDR consultation with a certified EMDR professional as I complete my certification.

Please note that there will be screening processes to determine if your level of need meets my level of expertise. If I feel I am not able to provide you with the level of care you require, I will provide referrals.
